Howdy folks, Captain DeFi here. It’s been a great past week we’ve had with our monthly meetup going ahead on Wednesday and seeing some amazing projects and organisations share what they’re up to. First up we had Ash and Harry JubiDAO and their SAFT model for DAOs. We also spoke with Nathan from Zipmex, Shane from CryptoTaxCalculator and had Professor Ron ven der Meyden from UNSW and Phil Laufenberg from Web3Academy share updates about their work. Finally, we had an awesome panel on Layer 2s with Howie Zhang from Immutable, Jazz Osvald from KWM and our very own Arturo Rodriguez (part of NotCentralised and other projects) all discuss the topic of what Layer 2s are and how we’ll see them used in future.
Then on Friday I was lucky enough to be a judge at the first Web3 Pitch Night as part of Fishburners regular pitch events. You can see some images/tweets below
as well as a video of some interviews Fishburners had with the winning team (Bounti) and our very own Arturo (see 13mins in) about the event
Well worth a watch.
If you’re after more content, the podcast that Nick Bishop and I recorded with Glen Frost from Australian Fintech also came out. We recorded it on June 14th and it just came out this past week but its still full of awesome stories about how we got started, what interests us in this space and a bit more about what makes DeFi different. Have a listen here.
There’s a lot of other things going on too such as keeping an eye on how the ATO will treat tax on NFTs. A good article shared by one member Harry (aka Tax Papi in Discord) is here: https://www.accountantsdaily.com.au/tax-compliance/17228-profit-motive-puts-crypto-trades-on-revenue-account and we also have this article in Bankless newsletter which was contributed to by our one of our members (Merlo.ETH) on the very same topic here:
It’s going to be interesting to see how this plays out that’s for sure but I’m hopeful that it’s not detrimental to the innovation being built in this space. NFTs have far more usage than just as images that people buy hoping for the value to go up and we’ll see more of those use cases coming out. Let’s not clip this things tail before it flies.
Yesterday, we hosted the first of what we plan to have as regular Twitter Spaces. We put out a vote over the weekend of when people felt would be a good day of the week and Monday was the popular choice. It was amazing to see 113 people tune in at various pointts during this 1hr 15min chat. I love that Twitter has allowed us to record these spaces and we went down the path of talking about the need for education in this space, learning about what people are up to and a bit of news updates too.
Keep an eye out on our Twitter page for more as we aim to make it a regular weekly thing. Even if you just want to come and say hi, let’s chat.
Anyway, that’s enough about the latest goings on this week. Will see you next week for more!
